NASUWT-the Teachers’ Union expresses deep concern over the government’s proposed changes to personal independence payment (PIP) and other disability benefits.

These reforms could have significant implications for disabled teachers, pupils and students, many of whom rely on this support to manage the additional costs associated with their disabilities.

As a union, we have long championed the rights of disabled teachers, advocating for fair treatment, workplace adjustments and an inclusive profession where all can thrive.

We are concerned that changes to disability benefits could make it harder for disabled teachers to remain in the workforce, particularly at a time when retention and wellbeing in the profession are already critical issues.

It is also essential to recognise the wider impact on schools and pupils. Many families of disabled children rely on PIP and other support to access essential services.

Any reduction in provision risks placing additional strain on an already overstretched education system, affecting students’ learning and wellbeing.

NASUWT urges the government to engage meaningfully with disabled people and their representatives to ensure that any reforms uphold their rights and do not create additional barriers to work, financial security or access to education.

We will continue to support our disabled members and monitor the impact of these proposals closely.
