Dr Patrick Roach at TUC 2024 1

Trade unions must remain vigilant to the hatred by far right politics in the UK and Europe, NASUWT – The Teachers’ Union has warned.

At the TUC Congress in Brighton, the NASUWT warned how the threat of far right populism sought to destroy the union movement and unions had to work together to resist and campaign against it.

The malignant tentacles of hate are spreading throughout our near neighbours in Europe as well as globally.

Trade Unions need to campaign hard to fight the threat. It is a threat that fundamentally seeks to undermine social cohesion.

It is imperative that trade unions remain vigilant and united against this insidious force that seeks to dismantle our values and democratic principles.

NASUWT General Secretary Dr Patrick Roach, speaking about the anti-racism work of unions told Congress: “Four years ago – when Black workers were left dying at work, when they were left unprotected by a shameful Government of law breakers – we stepped up.

“And when a government of multi-millionaires, bankrolled by the likes of Frank Hester, who got off on inciting racism, misogyny and violence towards Black women, we demanded change.

“We called them out, we fought back. And now we are showing that our Movement is on the side of Black workers and on the side of all working people.”
