Commenting on the publication of the Department for Education’s Working Lives of Teachers and Leaders Wave 2 data, Dr Patrick Roach, General Secretary of NASUWT – The Teachers’ Union, said:
 
“The latest official data provides a shocking indictment of 14 years of failure by the last government which left teachers feeling increasingly overworked, stressed and undervalued.
 
“The new Government now has the job of dealing with a profound crisis which is continuing to damage children’s education, as record numbers of teachers are leaving the profession and many more teachers are seriously considering doing the same.
 
“Now more than ever, the country needs a national Workforce Plan to tackle the crisis in teacher recruitment and retention, to lift morale, and to raise the status of the teaching profession.
 
“Schools cannot secure a world class education for pupils without teachers. The government’s commitment to fixing the foundations will require a national plan that will guarantee the educational entitlements of all children and young people to be taught by qualified teachers.”
